Thimphu’s meat market shows signs of stronger competition
A new CCAA study finds that Thimphu’s meat market is now showing clear signs of price
competition, particularly for fresh-cut meat products. Prices for beef, pork, Sekam and Shakam
vary significantly across shops, suggesting that retailers are increasingly setting their own prices
rather than following a common price list.
The findings indicate that CCAA’s intervention to stop collective price fixing, together with
subsequent training for meat vendors, is working, with most establishments now setting their
own prices.
The study also highlights the need for continued price monitoring and transparency to sustain
competition and protect consumer choice.
The CCAA welcomes any feedback or suggestions from the readers.
